GO Transit riders could see 5% fare hike
Metrolinx, the provincial agency that oversees transit in the GTA and Hamilton, has proposed at 5 per cent hike on most fares. The changes would take effect Feb. 1, 2015.
Discounts will still apply for PRESTO card holders, children and seniors
GO Transit riders should be prepared to pay higher fares beginning in February.
Metrolinx, the provincial agency that oversees transit in the GTA and Hamilton, has proposed at 5 per cent hike on most fares. The changes would take effect Feb. 1, 2015.
Single adult fares would increase as follows:
- 10 cent increase on minimum fare of $5.20.
- 30 cent increase on fares between $5.21 and $6.50.
- 40 cent increase on fares between $6.51 and $8.25.
- 50 cent increase on fares greater than $8.25.
The discounts for PRESTO card holders and for children and seniors will remain unchanged, Metrolinx says.
In most years, GO fares increase by about 5 per cent, money that Metrolinx says is required to "fund new
service improvements, as well as offset increasing costs from annual escalation of operating contracts."
The proposed hikes will be voted on at the agency's end-of-year meeting on Dec. 11, 2014.
