Outspoken council member hands out black arm bands to cab drivers

Toronto Coun. Giorgio Mammoliti told an Uber Canada representative Wednesday he wants Uber drivers to "get out" of his ward.

Mammoliti made the comment at a morning committee meeting held to discusses new licensing rules for the city's taxi cabs.

"I don't want Uber drivers in my ward. Get out," said Mammoliti.

The outspoken Ward 7 (York West) councillor also handed out black arm bands at the meeting, saying new licensing rules proposed in a staff report would mean "the death of the taxi industry."

"I've bought a few hundred of these bands today and I'm going to be asking taxi drivers to put them on to remind everybody at city hall that the people that are wearing the bands are the ones that have played by the rules."

Cab drivers are angry at a staff report that calls on the city to create a new licensing category that would allow ride-sharing companies like Uber to be regulated by the city.

Cab industry representatives say the move would force them to compete with companies that run an identical service while operating under less stringent regulations.
