Germany wins the World Cup, fans celebrate in the streets

Germany’s win at the World Cup has spurred soccer fans in Toronto to take their celebrations to the streets.

It's been a tough day for Argentine soccer fans, while for German fans, the party has just begun.

The Germans' 1-0  win over Argentina marked their fourth World Cup title — and their first as a united country. West Germany previously won in 1954, 1974 and 1990.

Both teams drew praise from Premier Kathleen Wynne for their effort in Sunday's final:

When the match was over, fans were soon gathering at Yonge-Dundas Square.

As of the early evening, police were reporting that the build-up of people was causing traffic congestion on Yonge Street as a result. The impromptu street gathering was still going almost two hours later.

But similar scenes were playing out elsewhere as German fans waved flags and celebrated the big win in Brazil. That meant lots of cheering, horn-honking and lots of people driving around the city celebrating and taking in the moment.

Dressed in a German jersey and carrying a flag, he made it clear that he's no fair-weather fan.

"I'm a dual citizen German and Canadian. So they are always my team!" he said in an email to CBC News.

It was also a good day for Bob the sloth, the Toronto Zoo resident who "predicted" that Germany was going to win big in the end.

Because the sloth, whose bold prediction caught the attention of many including Deputy Mayor Norm Kelly, was again being recognized after the German team's win on Sunday.
