A 32-year-old woman is dead after she was struck by vehicle in a hit and run in Scarborough on Friday night, Toronto police say.

The fatal collision between the vehicle and pedestrian happened in the area of Bridlewood Boulevard and Sheppard Avenue E., east of Pharmacy Avenue. Police said they were called to the area at about 9:10 p.m.

Duty Insp. Brian Maslowski told reporters on Friday night that the woman died of her injuries at the scene despite the best efforts of paramedics and members of the public who tried to help.

Maslowski said the suspect vehicle was eastbound on Sheppard Avenue E. from Pharmacy Avenue when it struck the woman. The motorist did not remain at the scene, he said.

The suspect vehicle was described as a dark coloured vehicle that may have sustained hood and windshield damage.

Maslowski said the driver is urged to get a lawyer and surrender to police.

He said "it's highly improbable" that the driver would not have noticed that they hit a pedestrian.

Officers have closed Sheppard Avenue E. between Pharmacy and Warden avenues as they investigate the collision. Motorists should expect delays.
