The Elementary Teachers' Federation of Ontario will return to the bargaining table on September 1, the union confirmed Thursday evening.

The union, which represents some 76,000 public elementary school teachers, has been in a legal strike position since May 10.

The union has cited wages, class size, hiring practices and teacher preparation time as major issues of contention in the negotiations, which broke down on May 11.

Thursday's announcement follows a decision by the Ontario English Catholic Teachers' Association to return to the bargaining table this week. Talks with the secondary teachers' federation are scheduled to resume next week as well.
