Several mayoral candidates went to Danzig Street on the anniversary of the shooting that left 2 dead and more than 20 others wounded.

Two years after a gang shootout shattered the peace of an east-end Toronto neighbourhood, the community is still trying to move forward.

A 14-year-old girl and a 23-year-old man were killed and more than 20 people were wounded in the violence on Danzig Street.

As the community marks the second anniversary today, residents insist the neighbourhood isn't a bad one, it just happened to be a place where something terrible took place.

They say the community is typically a quiet place where children play on the streets.

Toronto police say the 2012 shooting was a "wake up call" for officers and residents not to let minor incidents go unchecked.

Staff sergeant Peter Moreira says police now work closely with residents on preventing violence in what he calls a decent neighbourhood.

Police have said the shooting was triggered when members of the Galloway Boys gang allegedly took ownership of a barbecue and turned away a member of the rival Malvern crew.

That person then allegedly returned to the gathering with a number of friends to confront the Galloway Boys, sparking the shootout.
