CNE wraps up after 'a few challenges' during 2013 run

The last day of the Canadian National Exhibition drew many families on Monday, as they celebrated the final hours of their time together during the summer vacation period.

The Ex dealt with a few notable issues this year, including people trying to sell fake tickets to the public, patrons falling ill after eating the much-promoted cronut burger, the closure of two food vendors for food safety violations, and the presence of some $1 million worth of counterfeit goods.

"We've had a few challenges this year," said CNE general manager David Bednar, when speaking to CBC News on Monday.

"Let's face it — it hasn't been an easy year on a number of fronts. But I think the people of the GTA and the area have really shown a remarkable affection for the event."

The Ex closes its gates at 9 p.m. on Monday.

The annual festival typically draws 1 million visitors during its end-of-summer run.
