Yonge-Dundas Cineplex theatre to get 4D makeover
4DX technology will bring fog, rain, snow and scents to the in-theatre experience
Pretty soon, you might have to bundle up and bring an umbrella when you hit the theatre for movie night.
Cineplex is kicking its in-theatre experience up a notch with immersive 4DX technology that will include everything from fog, rain and snow to seat motion, back and leg ticklers and scents.
That's right, Smell-O-Vision is making a comeback, with what Cineplex describes on its website as, "a variety of fragrant scents spreading in the auditorium."
The new 4DX Experience is expected to launch at the Cineplex Cinemas Yonge-Dundas location in Toronto this summer.
"It is time to transform the experience of watching a movie," the website states, with "atmospherics like water, wind, lighting, scent and more."
Cineplex has already made efforts to diversify the in-theatre experience, with the introduction of the D-Box, a section of seats where viewers can pay extra to experience movement while they watch a film.
3D films have also made their way into the mainstream, but now even those can be enhanced, with the inclusion of these new motion and environmental effects.
There's no word yet on how much the 4DX experience will cost or when exactly it will launch. But with plans for a summer release, you might want to bring a coat if you plan on taking the family to see the newest Ice Age instalment.
