Can Toronto's mayoral candidates deliver on jobs promises?
Toronto's mayoral candidates have all promised to bring more jobs to the city. But as the CBC’s Jamie Strashin found out, experts question if the mayor’s office has any substantial influence on job creation.
City has little influence over job creation, critics say
Mayoral candidate John Tory unveiled his plan to create jobs in the GTA on Thursday.
Speaking at a coffee shop in Toronto’s east end, Tory said he would partner with private businesses to carry out a massive mixed-use redevelopment at the former Unilever site in the west Donlands area. The plan would necessitate moving a stretch of the Gardiner Expressway.
Tory was not alone in stressing job creation on the campaign trail this week, with Olivia Chow weighing-in and Karen Stintz claiming that Tory stole her idea on new jobs.
But as the CBC’s Jamie Strashin found out, experts question if the mayor’s office has any ability to bring jobs to Toronto.
