2 employees charged after assisted living resident died from exposure in 2023
Police say resident was locked outside overnight, found without vital signs the next day
Two employees at an assisted living facility in Oshawa have been charged with criminal negligence in the death of a resident who died from exposure after being locked outside overnight.
Police launched an investigation after a 79-year-old woman was found on a bench outside the Aspira Traditions retirement home without vital signs on April 1, 2023. The woman was taken to hospital where she was pronounced dead, police said in a news release.
The investigation found the woman exited the building the evening before around 7:30 p.m. via a stairwell. Over the course of the night, the woman tried to get back inside the building but was unable to because the doors were locked, police said.
An autopsy found the woman died from exposure.
On Tuesday, Durham police said a 34-year-old woman and a 29-year-old woman have been charged with criminal negligence causing death and failing to provide necessities of life.
They were release on an undertaking.
