Sunday night shooting victim was left for dead in Etobicoke parking lot, police say

Toronto police say the victim of a fatal weekend shooting was driven to a parking lot and left for dead almost a full day before being found by emergency responders.

The victim, Amir Naraine, was discovered inside inside a car at a plaza near Kipling Avenue and Steeles Avenue West around 7:30 p.m. Sunday.

Det. Andy Singh said it appears Naraine, 21, was shot somewhere else and then left in the parking lot.

"The vehicle was abandoned," Singh told reporters. "We believe whoever left it behind did so in a rush and they left the young man behind."

Police say Naraine is Toronto's 51st homicide victim of 2019.

Victim may have been left in parking lot overnight

Surveillance video obtained by CBC Toronto appears to capture the car arriving at the parking lot at around 12:25 a.m. Sunday, around 19 hours before police arrived on scene.

Singh added that Naraine may have been alive when the vehicle arrived.

"It's something the autopsy will tell us," he said.

The surveillance footage later captured a person driving up to the vehicle, looking into the car window, and then leaving the scene at 7:25 p.m. Sunday.

Police received a 911 call at around 7:30 p.m.

While it's not yet clear who left Naraine at the plaza, or how he was eventually discovered, Singh is imploring anyone with information to contact police.

"It is a collective responsibility for everyone to come forward," he said.

Investigators are also asking anyone who may have seen the car in which Naraine was found — a  black 2018 Chevrolet Malibu with tinted windows — to contact homicide detectives or Crime Stoppers anonymously.

Police have not provided any information about possible suspects.
