Adam Vaughan wins Liberal nomination for Trinity-Spadina

Adam Vaughan has secured the Liberal candidacy for the federal byelection in Trinity-Spadina. 

The nomination means Vaughan will face NDP candidate Joe Cressy for the seat, which was vacated by Olivia Chow when she entered the race to be Toronto’s new mayor. 

The riding in downtown Toronto has long been a battleground between the NDP and Liberals. It was also the scene of strife within the latter when would-be candidate Christine Innes was disqualified by Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau.

Vaughan thanked supporters following the vote on Saturday before — in short speech on one of his favourite topics — stressing the need to provide more affordable housing, particularly for students and seniors. 

Housing “does more than just simply put a roof over your head,” he told the crowd. “ “It builds the great neighbourhoods, the great cities that make this country what it is. And this party has known that all along.” 

Vaughan announced his intention to seek the nomination in April. The date for the byelection has not yet been set.
