Thunder Bay Transit, student unions reach agreement on U-Pass

Students at Lakehead University and Confederation College will be able to ride Thunder Bay Transit for another year with their U-Pass after a one-year deal was struck this week between the city and student unions.

One-year deal increases U-Pass price by $7

The president of the Lakehead Unversity Student Union says he'd like to reset the negotiations with the city on the university and college students' U-Pass.

Students at Lakehead University and Confederation College will be able to ride Thunder Bay Transit for another year with their U-Pass after a deal was reached this week between the city and the two student unions.

The deal will keep the program going until the end of the 2016/2017 school year and see the price of the U-Pass increase to about $102.

The short-term agreement was struck because the college student union needed to set its fees immediately, earlier than the university, said Roman Jakubowski, the president of the Lakehead University Student Union.

"I think I'd just like to emphasize that we're not out of the woods here yet," Jakubowski said. "I mean, people here are, 'oh, you've reached a deal, it sounds like things are over.' Things are not over."

Jakubowski said he wants to reach a long-term agreement with the city for the pass. He will bring his concerns to council on Monday night where he plans to ask for a reset in negotiations.

"I don't think that it's prudent to wait until the last possible minute to start negotiating," he said. "I think the city really needs to articulate a long-term vision for the U-Pass."
