Thunder Bay police charge five in jail riot

The Thunder Bay Police Service Criminal Investigations Branch has charged five men in connection with the Dec. 7, 2015 hostage-taking incident at the Thunder Bay District Jail.

Police have charged 35-year-old Jeffrey Kakegamic with hostage-taking, rioting, assault peace officer, assault with a weapon, threats to cause bodily harm, and mischief under $5,000.

Twenty-three-year-old Jeffrey Achneepineskum is charged with hostage-taking, rioting, threats to kill, assault with a weapon and mischief over $5,000.

Justin Beaver, 24, and Carl Rae, 33, are both charged with rioting and hostage taking.

Police say they will also charge a sixth man in relation to the incident as well. That man was released from custody prior to the completion of the police investigation.

Achneepineskum will appear in court next on March 10.  All others have been remanded until Feb.16 for video court.
