Thunder Bay city council: 3 things to watch for Monday

The proposed event centre will again be on the agenda at Thunder Bay city council's Monday meeting.

Councillors to receive event centre report, hear presentation from city staff

City councillors will officially receive administration's report on the proposed event centre Monday, including city staff's recommendation to proceed to the design and build phase of the project, contingent on federal and provincial funding. (City of Thunder Bay)

The proposed event centre is the key item on the agenda at Thunder Bay city council's Monday meeting.

Last week, city staff released its project update, and recommended council proceed to the design and build phase, on the condition that the project receives federal and provincial funding.

Councillors will officially receive that report Monday.

Here is a list of three things to watch for at city council:

  • 1. The event centre

Administration is scheduled to make a presentation on the event centre report. Councillors will then be able to ask questions of city staff to clarify anything, or to request more information. They will not be allowed to debate the issue  — that will happen at a special council meeting on Thursday.

  • 2. A low-income tax and water credit program

During budget deliberations, council axed a program that provided a credit on tax and water bills to low-income city residents. Coun. Trevor Giertuga will ask his colleagues to reconsider. He will need two-thirds of council to support him.

  • 3. Putting a memorial wall for military personnel at Marina Park

A committee made up of city residents wants a wall built at Marina Park that lists all military personnel from Thunder Bay and/or the region killed in action. The project would be paid for with money the committee raises. City staff are recommending the memorial be built at Waverley Park. Coun. Larry Hebert, on behalf of the committee, will ask council to approve a location by the waterfront.
