We started the (snow)ball rolling with CBC Superior Morning. Then the festive fun continues Friday afternoon, with Sounds of the Season:The Afternoon Edition, hosted by Cathy Alex and broadcasting live from our newsroom, beginning at 4 p.m. (ET).

Our special musical guest is Nick Sherman, a singer-songwriter who describes himself as the voice from the wilderness. Home for Sherman is still the town of Sioux Lookout, Ont., but he spent much of his youth on the land, moving between his hometown, the small community of Weagamow Lake First Nation, Ont., and his family's trapline on North Caribou Lake, Ont.

Sherman writes on his website that it was there in the depths of the northern Ontario forest that his family members would play guitar as they tended their trapline, and he found himself soaking in the songs and lyrics.

Sherman is playing live throughout the program. We'll also be talking about the role of food in literature, and we'll visit Thunder Bay's Dew Drop Inn soup kitchen.

The goal of our Sounds of the Season event is to collect as many non-perishable food items, as we can, for the RFDA.

Need a few suggestions as to what you can bring?

Here's a list of the ten most needed food items, as suggested by the RFDA:

  • canned fish or meat ie: tuna, salmon, turkey or ham, etc.
  • mac & cheese , ie: Kraft Dinner
  • canned vegetables
  • canned fruit
  • pork and beans
  • peanut butter
  • pasta
  • pasta sauce
  • cereal
  • canned soup

Grab a can, or a box, or a soup and stop in for a visit. We'd love to see you.

Doors at the station, 213 E. Miles Street in Thunder Bay, will be open until 6 p.m.
