The driver of a bus that struck and killed a 10-year-old cyclist in May in Thunder Bay, Ont., has been charged with careless driving causing death

Riker McKelvey was hit at the corner of Red River Road and Clarkson Street South. A memorial sprang up at the intersection shortly afterwards and the wider community rallied to support his family.

The Thunder Bay Police Service (TBPS) issued a media release announcing the charge Friday, even though the case had already been filed in court in the fall and the driver first appeared in court in October.

It is unusual for police to wait this long to announce charges once they've been laid, which police acknowledged in the release.

"This information is being released some time after the collision and charging date, and is being put out after consultation with the family of the victim," the statement says. "This was a tragic incident that had a dramatic impact on all involved, and Thunder Bay as a whole."

The police said it won't be releasing names or further details in the case.

CBC News asked police for more details on why and how it decided to release the information on Friday, but a spokesperson said the service would not provide further comment.
