Radio-collared moose caught on camera 'doesn't look very good'

A wayward moose in the northwest is helping researchers in Minnesota.

Last week, a trail camera set up near Memory Road, off Highway 61, captured a moose out for a walk. The animal was sporting a radio collar fitted by the Grand Portage First Nation.

A spokesperson with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources said the photo provides valuable information.

"You can tell in that picture that moose really doesn't look very good," Erika Butler said. "It's very skinny. It has some hair breakage. So it's some information for us on the status of that animal."

The state is radio-collaring moose to find out why so many are dying.

Last year, the state lost one third of its moose population, she noted.
