Isadore Day elected new Ontario Regional Chief
Chiefs from First Nations across Ontario chose Isadore Day as their new representative on Wednesday in a traditional election process that will saw them physically stand behind the candidate they supported.
Day is currently the chief of Serpent River First Nation, located about 160 kilometres east of Sault Ste. Marie.
The two other candidates in the election were:
- Tom Bressette, currently at Kettle and Stony Point First Nation, who previously served as regional chief from 1997 to 2000
- Randall Phillips, former chief and current First Nation councillor at Oneida Nation of the Thames
The out-going Ontario regional chief, Stan Beardy, announced last week that he is taking a break from politics.
The selection ceremony began at 9 a.m. as part of the three-day All Ontario Chiefs Conference, taking place at Wauzhushk Onigum, near Kenora. Day's election was finalized by noon.
There are 133 First Nations communities in Ontario.
