Scoop operator dies after rock fall at Goldcorp's Musselwhite mine

​Goldcorp Inc. says a worker has been killed at its Musselwhite Mine in northwestern Ontario.

The company said the scoop operator died while working underground when rocks fell and completely covered the digger on Wednesday morning.

Goldcorp said it is co-operating with an investigation to determine the cause of the accident and offering support to the worker's family and employees at the mine.

Work at the Musselwhite Mine has been suspended until authorities complete their investigation.

According to Natural Resources Canada, Musselwhite is a fly-in, fly-out operation located along the southern shore of Opapimiskan Lake, about 480 kilometres northwest of Thunder Bay. An all-weather road connects the mine to the community of Pickle Lake, more than 250 kilometres to the south.

Musselwhite began commercial production in April 1997.
