March was the busiest month ever at Thunder Bay's airport.

A record 67,000 passengers passed through during the month, compared to about 60,000 in previous years.

Interim president and CEO Ed Schmidtke credits two major amateur skiing events for the spike in traffic. Both the Under-16 Ontario Alpine Ski Championships and the 2015 Haywood Cross-Country Ski National Championships were hosted in the city.

"March is always busy because we have outbound traffic as people are trying to get some sun during the March Break," he told CBC News.

"But with the two big cross-country ski events, we had full airplanes coming in at the same time we had full airplanes going out."
