Keewatin-Patricia teachers set to walk out Tuesday
Schools in the Kenora area to be closed for the day
Elementary school teachers with the Keewatin-Patricia board have announced a one-day strike, making them the first group of teachers in the northwest to do so.
The school board said all its elementary schools will shut down on Tuesday. Day care programs located in schools — and operated by a third party — will operate, but before-and-after school programs at the day cares will not be available.
Schools will re-open on Wednesday.
The board said the teachers union will not hold any protests outside schools, but will demonstrate outside the government building in Dryden.
The union representing public elementary teachers across the province said each of their schools will have a one-day walkout before the break for the holidays. Parents will be given 72 hours notice of any strike action.
Elsewhere in the northwest, teachers with the Lakehead and Superior Greenstone public boards will be in a legal strike position Monday. Teachers with the Rainy River district board are already in a legal strike position.
