Jamie McGuire murder brings Manitoba task force to Thunder Bay
The former Thunder Bay resident was found dead in rural Manitoba 20 years ago
Members of a joint police task force from Manitoba have travelled to Thunder Bay to distribute posters with a photo of a woman murdered 20 years ago.
In March of 1994, former Thunder Bay resident Jamie McGuire was found dead in rural Manitoba, between Portage la Prairie and Winnipeg. She was 20 years old.
“We know that Jamie was living in Thunder Bay at the time just before her murder, and then she moved to Winnipeg,” she said.
“So we're looking to generate any kinds of leads that people may have, that may have known her, maybe some past contact, previous knowledge of her, really anything that we might be able to drum up with these posters.”
Aitken said bringing the investigation back to McGuire's time in Thunder Bay is a key focus.
'Lengthy investigation'
McGuire's case is one of a number of unsolved homicides and missing persons cases being looked into by the Manitoba task force on missing and murdered exploited persons.
Called Project Devote, it is a joint effort of Manitoba RCMP and Winnipeg police.
Some of the cases it is looking into date back to 1961.
Aitken said the unsolved cases they have selected for further investigation are based on risk factors that investigators have determined apply to the homicide victims, including lifestyle. The criteria is not based on age, gender or ethnicity, she noted.
Aitken said she is not aware of any interviews being conducted in Thunder Bay but says “if people wanted to speak with them we would definitely make efforts in terms of reaching out and speaking with people.”
“Each tip that we get is correlated with some of the existing information. This is a lengthy investigation"
When the project was announced in 2012, the list included eight missing people, and 20 homicide victims.
The tip line is 1-888-673-3316.
