Hockey Day to feature Staal family rink
If you haven't heard yet, Saturday is Hockey Day in Canada — and Thunder Bay is one of the featured cities.
Events will take place at the Staal rink at the Thunder Bay Christian School, which is located in the neighbouring municipality of Oliver-Paipoonge.
Henry Staal is the father of the famous hockey-playing Staal brothers, Jordan, Eric and Marc. He said Hockey Day is a chance to profile the talent that comes out of Thunder Bay.
"I think people are interested, for one thing, as to what's in the water here," Staal said. "I mean we've got a lot of good players coming from here and good kids, so I think it's kind of nice to highlight that."
As part of the celebrations, young hockey players in Thunder Bay are getting some new equipment. The NHL Player's Association's has donated 120 sets of gear.
Besides the Staal brothers, NHL players from Thunder Bay including Alex Auld, Robert Bortuzzo, Taylor and Tom Pyatt, and Patrick Sharp are supporting the project.
