A longtime local activist and educator has been recognized for her achievements, including efforts to make schools safer and more welcoming for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) students.

The Elementary Teachers' Federation of Ontario has given an Honourary Life Member Award to Ellen Chambers, who is  a former teacher and current school trustee for the Lakehead Public School Board. She received the award at the group's annual meeting in Toronto.

"It means a great deal to me," she said of the award, which is the federation's highest form of recognition. "I'm very thankful for it."

The advocate for social justice in the Thunder Bay area helped create policies and training regiments to support LGBT students in schools.  She was inspired to serve this part of society a decade ago after her son endured homophobic bullying.

"It was very clear that there was work to be done," she said. "I knew that education was the key."

Chambers said communities are evolving into a more welcoming place for LGBT youth and that is certainly a good thing.

"Things have changed positively. The world has come along, that's for sure."

"Things did change in many big ways in our community for those kids."
