The cause of the 2013 fire at the James Street Swing Bridge has been ruled as undetermined by the Office of the Fire Marshal.

The cause of the fire that damaged the James Street swing bridge in Thunder Bay will remain unknown.

The Office of the Fire Marshall has completed its investigation into the 2013 fire that damaged the bridge, and ruled the cause as "undetermined," spokeswoman Carol Gravelle said Tuesday.

"Incidents are classified as undetermined when there are more than one possible cause that come from the available evidence and collected data," Gravelle said.

The bridge, which is owned by CN, is the most-direct connection between Thunder Bay and Fort William First Nation.

It has remained closed to vehicular traffic since the fire, but trains regularly traverse it.

The city and CN are currently engaged in a legal battle over who's responsible for repairing the bridge.
