Bearskin Airlines lays off 11 mechanics, union says
Temporary layoff notices issued Tuesday evening
Eleven mechanics with Bearskin Airlines have been issued temporary layoff notices, CBC News has learned.
The mechanics' union, the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, confirmed that all of the mechanics are based in Sioux Lookout.
Michael Corrado, general chairperson for IAMAW Transportation District Lodge 140, said the workers are all seasoned mechanics, one of whom has close to 33 years experience.
Bearskin Airlines marketing director Ron Hell would not confirm the layoffs, but did refer to cuts the airline announced last week to operations in Ottawa and Waterloo.
"We're restructuring our company," said Hell. "Obviously, that's going to have some impact in terms of our employee situation across the network."
Hell added that anyone affected by the restructuring has been notified of how it will affect them.
In addition to the effects on southern Ontario as part of the restructuring, flight frequency between Thunder Bay and northeastern Ontario will be reduced starting April 7.
