Officials with the provincial government will be in Thunder Bay, Ont., on Thursday to speak with area residents about the basic income pilot project that is set to roll out in the northwestern Ontario city.

Packages, which explain the program and requests eligible people sign up,  have been mailed out to residents in the City of Thunder Bay, as well as a number of surrounding rural municipalities.

According to the province, a public meeting is scheduled in Thunder Bay June 29 at the West Thunder Community Centre on Edward Street. The forum starts at 7 p.m. Residents who want to attend must register.

The meeting is expected to include a presentation by Karen Glass, Ontario's deputy minister responsible for the poverty reduction strategy, and will be followed by a question-and-answer session.

In April, the Ontario government announced the basic income pilot in three communities — Lindsay, Ont., Hamilton and Thunder Bay — which is slated to explore the effectiveness of providing a basic income — no matter what — to people who are currently living on low incomes.
