Police and fire officials still investigating northwestern Ontario fire
The National Chief of the Assembly of First Nations is offering condolences to the Mishkeegogamang First Nation in northwestern Ontario following a fire.
A residential fire broke out Thursday morning in the community about 300 km northwest of Thunder Bay.
The Nishnawbe-Aski Police Service has not yet confirmed any fatalities.
However, in a news release Friday, National Chief Shawn Atleo said Mishkeegogamang is grieving the loss of four members.
"It is with a heavy heart that I offer condolences to the entire community of Mishkeegogamang Ojibway Nation … It is in difficult times that First Nations come together to mourn, to support and to comfort one another," said Atleo.
Police and the Ontario fire marshal's office are investigating with the assistance of the Ontario Provincial Police forensic identification unit.
A spokesperson for the Nishnawbe-Aski Police Service said further details could be released Friday evening.
