2 crashes involving 10 vehicles snarl Thunder Bay Expressway

Two separate collisions involving 10 vehicles on the Thunder Bay Expressway Wednesday morning prompted Thunder Bay OPP to issue a warning to drivers.

Police are asking drivers involved in minor collisions to pull over to the shoulder portion of the highway as quickly as possible to avoid impeding traffic.

The warning comes after a crash south of Oliver Road that saw one southbound vehicle strike another from behind.

In a news release, police said the vehicles remained stopped in the live lane of traffic while the drivers contacted police.

Shortly after, another southbound vehicle slowed as its driver approached the scene of the collision. This caused a chain reaction with seven other vehicles, which were also approaching from behind. They all collided with the vehicle that was in front of them.

In total, 10 vehicles were involved in the two separate motor vehicle collisions, police said. There were no injuries reported. Several of the vehicles sustained extensive damage.

"If you're involved in a minor collision, a fender bender, pull over the shoulder portion of the highway to contact police,” said OPP Cst. Diana Cole.

The investigation is continuing.
