Vale's Sudbury mines to resume production
Most mines should be back online by the end of next week, says Vale spokesperson
Nickel mining giant Vale says most of its mines in Sudbury will be back in production by the end of next week.
All mining has been on hold since a fatal accident at the Coleman mine Jan.29 — the fourth death at Vale's Canadian operations in less than a year.
Angie Robson, a spokesperson with the company, said the pause has helped the company and employees to focus on working together to address safety problems.
"Everybody wants to be involved in that discussion and we have done our best to involve all our employees at all levels," Robson said.
"Employees at all levels, whether you are a mining employee or at a surface plant or in an office building, we are very, very affected by what has transpired over the past year. And I think there is a general recognition ... that we work best when it comes to safety when we work together."
Robson said all workers have been called back at this point, but they continue to work only on safety improvements.
