Vale Canada Ltd. has launched a new website detailing how its mining operation affects the environment in Sudbury.

The mining giant says it went online to give the public more information about its various environmental initiatives.

But the website also meet requirements set out by the Ministry of the Environment, according to Danica Pagnutti, a corporate affairs specialist with Vale.

"Some reports are now required by the Ministry of the Environment so that was maybe the catalyst for the website," Pagnutti said.

The website includes information on air and water quality, as well as the company's re-greening efforts.

Vale has been mining in Sudbury for more than 100 years, and its operations there are among the largest in the world.

On its corporate website, Vale says the Sudbury basin still possesses untapped deposits of nickel that help ensure mining will continue to play an important role in the life of the community.
