Timmins forest fire evacuations end

Fire crews with the Ministry of Natural Resources dealt with 21 new forest fires throughout the northeast over the weekend.

Risk still high to extreme across the region

Fire crews with the Ministry of Natural Resources dealt with 21 new forest fires throughout the northeast over the weekend.

Two trailer parks in the Timmins area were evacuated Sunday night due to a nearby fire. Everyone has since returned to their homes.

Another fire in northeastern Ontario closed Highway 17 over the weekend in the White River/Wawa area.

MNR fire information officer Lindsay Marks said the ministry will have to keep a close watch for lightning strikes that could spark more fires. She said conditions are dry, with not much rain expected in the coming days.

"We're supposed to get a bit of showers over the course of the week," she said. "But it's not supposed to be a whole lot and it's not in all the areas."

Marks said the risk for fires across the region ranges from high to extreme.

The MNR is recommending fires in the bush aren't started two hours before sunset and that fires should be extinguished two hours after sunrise.
