Seniors in Sudbury are looking to keep moving and stay active, according to the Sudbury Chapter of the Canadian Association of Retired Persons.

The vice-chair of the association is 70 years old. He said having only one lung isn't stopping his goal of training to walk 25 kilometres later this year.

"It's for no reason, other than to promote getting off the couch," Kevin Shanahan said.

"It's as simple as that."

The Sudbury chapter of the association held its annual general meeting in Sudbury Wednesday, and Shanahan said one objective is to get people over the age of 55 exercising.

"Don't be sitting around waiting to die," he said.

Chair of the Sudbury association, Hugh Kruzel, said more seniors are moving to Sudbury to spend their final years, and they're looking for options.

"People are going, 'I need to be healthy now. I need to be healthy through my retirement and I want to be healthy as I approach my final years'," he said.

At the meeting, Kruzel said association members already have a good start, as not one in attendance was using a walker.

Rainbow Routes is offering free cycling and urban polling classes to seniors in Sudbury this season, and they're also looking to expand into the Valley, where many people are spending their retirement.
