Celebrations were held Tuesday in Sudbury to mark a big milestone for the city's signature giant nickel.

The Big Nickel turned 50 on July 22, and events were held throughout the day.

Located at Dynamic Earth, the 30 foot replica of a 1951 Canadian nickel overlooks the intersection of Municipal Road 55 and Big Nickel Drive.

To celebrate, an all-day party took place at Dynamic Earth, including music, entertainment, a currency roadshow, gold panning, and fireworks.

There were also attempts to break two money-related world records.

Sudburians captured and shared some of the events on social media, and took time to wish the Big Nickel, ‘Happy Birthday.’
