Sudbury grief workshop supports parents of adult children who die

After Betty Szilva's 49-year-old daughter died of cancer, she looked to help others grieving the death of adult children.

Dealing with the loss of a loved one is always hard. The loss of a child can be particularly hard. A bereavement group in Sudbury is offering a workshop on how to grieve the loss of an adult child. Workshop host, Betty Szilva told us more.

For years, Betty Szilva helped people who were dealing with loss. As a former hospital chaplain, she provided grieving families with support.

But then, that grief hit home when Szilva's 49-year-old daughter Rosemary died of cancer.

"It was the deepest sense of loss I've ever had," she said. "It was just so painful, and the pain was something that actually became a teacher for me."

Now, Szilva hopes to help others who are grieving the death of an adult child. She works with the Bereavement Foundation of Sudbury. She spoke with CBC Sudbury Morning North radio show host Markus Schwabe on Tuesday morning.

The Tuesday night grief workshop is happening at 7 p.m. at the Marguerite and Gerry Lougheed Centre. The workshop is free and open to anyone.
