Sudbury Daystarter: Police seek suspect in Hanmer hit-and-run

HIT-AND-RUN: Sudbury police are looking for a suspect in a hit-and-run case reported in Hanmer on Friday.  Police said between 3 p.m. and 4 p.m., a group of youths was walking on Heritage Drive when a vehicle hit one of the them, sending that person flying onto the hood of the car.  According to police, when the pedestrian fell off the hood, the driver left the scene. The vehicle in question is described as a grey four-door car. There is no word on the condition of the victim. 

SUDBURY BYELECTION: Suzanne Shawbonquit will represent the New Democrats as the candidate in the upcoming Sudbury byelection. She emerged victorious at a nomination meeting held Sunday in the city. READ MORE

CAMPAIGNING:  Now that all the major parties have candidates in place, Sudbury voters can expect to see a lot of campaigning in the next few weeks. But, analysts say this election could look and sound a bit different than usual, as voters are casting either a government or opposition vote—and voter turnout is traditionally lower in a byelection. 

SUDBURY CITY COUNCIL: Ontario Ombudsman Andre Marin could soon return as Sudbury’s closed door meeting investigator. The new city council will vote tomorrow on who it wants to appoint to the job for the next four years. The previous council fired the Ombudsman nearly two years ago.

SMOKE-FILLED PORTER FLIGHT:  The Transportation Safety Board says a simple bearing is behind the problem that forced a Sudbury-bound Porter airplane to make an emergency landing late last month. Passengers noticed the cabin fill with smoke shortly after take-off. TSB's Don Enns says a bearing in the engine failed allowing engine oil to get into an air compressor. He says the investigation is now closed. READ MORE

Most highways have partial snow cover, with visibility fair at times this morning because of light snow around Sault Ste. Marie, Manitoulin Island, Sudbury and south of North Bay. As skies clear visibility will improve.

Extreme cold warning for Kapuskasing and Hearst.
A bitterly cold arctic air mass combined with winds up to 15 km/hr will produce wind chill values near -40 this morning with conditions improving later this morning. 

TODAY:  A few morning flurries for southern communities, then clearing. All regions can expect sunshine. Temperatures will drop several degrees.Manitoulin Island and the north shore can expect a high of -13 C. By this afternoon most regions can expect temperatures from -17 C to -23 C. 

TONIGHT:  Lows from -21 C to -31 C.

TOMORROW:  A mix of sun and cloud with highs from -16 C up to -6 C.
