Smaller mining-supply companies will get $1 million worth of Sudbury city tax dollars in the next five years.

City council unanimously voted Tuesday to give the money to the Centre for Excellence in Mining Innovation. The grant will be distributed to smaller companies in Sudbury that need help starting deep mining projects.

The investment was recommended by the city-owned Greater Sudbury Development Corporation.

Chair Darren Stinson said the money will increase innovation and strengthen "our most important sector."

There was no debate about the grant, unlike the $2 million sought by the Sudbury-based Advanced Medical Research Institute of Canada two years ago.

After much hand wringing, council eventually decided to give that research group $1.75 million.
