Sudbury city council considering vacant Long Lake school purchase
Council also weighing $1M dollar for Centre for Excellence in Mining Innovation
Sudbury city councillors will discuss the possible purchase of an old elementary school property at Monday night's meeting.
The Rainbow District School Board closed Long Lake Public School in 2012, but recently declared the property surplus.
Before the property can be sold on the open market, the city and other school boards have to pass on the sale.
Sudbury city council recently voted to negotiate with the English Catholic school board about some land in the Minnow Lake area.
The city has expressed interest in about 0.6 ha of bush that's part of a vacant school board property near the corner of Bancroft Drive and First Avenue.
Mining million?
Sudbury city council will vote tomorrow night on a request for $1 million from the city's economic development corporation on behalf of the Centre for Excellence in Mining Innovation.
The research organization is seeking $200,000 over five years, and the money would be granted to smaller companies in Sudbury that need help starting deep mining projects.
These sort of grants have been controversial in the past. There was much debate in 2013 when the Advanced Medical Research Institute of Canada, or AMRIC, asked Sudbury city council for $10 million — similar to what the city gave the Laurentian University School of Architecture.
In the end, council granted AMRIC $1.75 million in funding.
