A city bus caught fire in downtown Sudbury this morning, just a few blocks from the city's transit terminal.

The blackened, smoking bus was stopped by the driver on Cedar Street, just off of the Kingsway.

Capt. Peter Ferguson with Greater Sudbury Fire Services said firefighters en route from another call noticed the smoke and stopped at the scene.

"I don't know what started [it], but the bus was on fire when we got here. It looked like the engine compartment. That's all we know right now," he said.

Most of the damage appeared to be in the rear part of the bus where the engine is located.

CBC has learned from the city that there were ten passengers on board at the time, but the driver evacuated them.

There are no injuries reported.

A city claims adjuster at the scene told CBC News that it's still too early to tell what started the fire, but vehicle was to be towed back to the transit garage for a more thorough investigation into the cause.

Just five months ago, another Greater Sudbury transit bus caught fire in Capreol.
