In Jan. 2012, Stephen Perry was working underground at the Coleman Mine in Levack when he was struck and killed by falling rock.

The inquest — which is mandatory under the Coroner's Act — is taking place at the Sudbury courthouse.

It will examine the events surrounding Perry's death, and the jury "may make recommendations aimed at preventing similar deaths," according to a release from the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services.

It's expected to last five days and hear from about 10 witnesses.
