Sudbury police are warning people to stay off of thin ice after a man riding a snow machine went through the ice into Whitewater Lake in Azilda on Tuesday.

Greater Sudbuy police said the man escaped unharmed after his plunge into the freezing water, but he is now facing a charge of careless driving.

"Due to a recent snowfall, local waterways may appear to be frozen," said a news release from police. "However, there is not enough ice to support any weight at this time."

On Monday, an Instagram user posted a picture of a snowmobile submerged in water with the hashtag "#Sudbury", though it's not clear if the photo is in any way connected to the incident outlined by Sudbury police.

The Canadian Red Cross recommends 15 cm of ice for walking and skating and 25 cm for snowmobiles.
