Inspector Mark Andrews said there have already been four deaths in provincial waterways this year, and police aim to prevent any more tragedies from happening.

"We need people to make sure that they're not taking alcohol out onto the water," he said.

Police will be checking to ensure boaters aren't impaired by alcohol or drugs.

They will also "make sure that all their safety equipment is in the boats, [and] make sure everyone has a personal floatation device or a life jacket."

Andrews said 20 people drowned in Ontario last year — 17 of whom were not wearing life jackets.
