Starting on Wednesday, all municipal parks in Greater Sudbury will be smoke free.

The city said the smoking ban will affect all parks and sports fields, including tennis courts, playgrounds, amphitheatres, gazebos, beaches, trails and walkways.

The city said the goal is to create a healthier community by setting a positive example for children, and also protecting non-smokers from exposure to second hand smoke.

City council approved the new bylaw in February.

Sudbury joins a list of 50 other cities and towns in Ontario, including North Bay, that have banned smoking from municipal parks.

If people don't comply with the bylaw, fines may be levied by City of Greater Sudbury bylaw enforcement officers or people may be asked to leave a park by municipal staff, according to the city's website.
