The Cree community on the James Bay Coast has lost a respected leader.

Mushkegowuk Grand Chief Stan Louttit has died.

Through his work with the Mushkegowuk council, Louttit was a fierce advocate for First Nations rights and the well-being of communities on the James Bay Coast.

Mushkegowuk Grand Chief Stan Loutit died after a battle with cancer.

Louttit lost a battle with cancer.

Charlie Angus, the Member of Parliament for Timmins-James Bay said Loutit was "enormously respected."

"But he was also incredibly engaged in terms of all the issues: education, health, housing, economic development, infrastructure," Angus said.

"He would be right there, getting his hands dirty trying to make change."

Angus said he will also remember Louttit for his sense of humour and ability to make the people around him feel comfortable.

Loutit leaves behind his wife of 40 years, Sharon, and four daughters.
