Mayor's proposal could be 'political weapon'

A proposal championed by the mayor was roundly rejected by council at its Tuesday night meeting.

Sudbury city council unanimously voted against Mayor Marianne Matichuk's request for legislation that would allow elected officials to be removed from office by the public.

The proposal would have given citizens the power to petition and remove municipal politicians before their term is over.

Councillor Terry Kett said the legislation could be used carelessly.

"This mechanism, it can often be used irresponsibly, and it can be used by political parties or interest groups as a political weapon against rival incumbents," Kett said.

Recall legislation doesn't exist in Ontario, but there is similar legislation in British Columbia.
