The Producer

Leisure Farms in Sturgeon Falls — now a third-generation family farm — is managed and operated by Mitch Deschatelets.

The Crops

Fall strawberries — also known as "day neutrals" — were developed a number of years ago to extend the berry season in climates like that of northeastern Ontario. Deschatelets said the berries are generally as sweet, red and juicy as their early-season cousins, and can typically be harvested until about first frost.

Corn — a summer BBQ staple — is really hitting its stride right now, according to Deschatelets. He said his variety this year is very sweet, and he recommends taking a bite out of a raw cob to test the sweetness and freshness before buying.

The Cook

Stephanie Piché used to run a catering company in Sudbury. Now, she has reinvented her culinary career as a food and travel expert, offering cooking and wine tasting classes — and taking guests on gastronomy tours around the world.
