For the first time, five female firefighters from Greater Sudbury are getting pumped to compete in an international competition.

The group will be competing on July 3rd, at the Scott FireFit Championships in Wasaga Beach.

The volunteer firefighters — who are all over the age of 35 — train several days a week.

That's in addition to juggling full- and part-time jobs and motherhood.

Firefighter Sarah Brosha says the additional commitment has paid big dividends.

"Doing this has gotten us into better shape, and helped us with our firefighting, overall," she told CBC News.

"For us, now, to grab the charge-hose line and go into the building is no obstacle whatsoever. Our cardio, our strength — everything — has increased."

The team is known as the D4 Hooligans, and includes Brosha, Nicole Brabant, Tammy Joyce, Merry McCallum and Laura Amyot.

The group trains at the Lionel E. Lalonde fire training tower in Azilda.
