Sudbury author Danielle Daniel releases 'The Dependent,' memoir of a military wife
'It really was an act of survival for me to write this book'
What may have seemed like the end was, in fact, just the beginning of a new chapter for a Sudbury, Ont., author whose new memoir chronicles her life as the wife of a paralyzed Canadian paratrooper.
Danielle Daniel is officially launching her book The Dependent on Friday.
The author and artist — whose previous work includes the children's book Sometimes I Feel Like a Fox — is married to retired Sgt. Steve Daniel. A parachuting accident in 2005 left him paralyzed from the waist down.
"In one single day, everything changed," said Daniel of the day she got the call about Steve's accident.
What followed, she said, were many weeks away from home — and their toddler son, Owen — while Steve worked through rehabilitation in southern Ontario.
That's when she said she faced bouts of depression — and a period of time in which the pair separated.
"We did go through a very, very difficult time ... it really was an act of survival for me to write this book," she said.
"At first it was an act of therapy. It then became an act of art."
