Classical musician "popping-up" in concerts around Sudbury
Spontaneity is the name of the tune for a Sudbury musician.
Jane Russell, principal violist in the Sudbury Symphony Orchestra and member of the Juno-nominated Silver Birch String Quartet, is hosting her first in a series of six "pop-up" concerts this Saturday.
Pop-up concerts let people mark a date in the calendar, but the time and the place is kept secret until a few days before to build excitement.
"With concerts, it's hard to build anticipation because you usually know the repertoire, you know where it's going to be," said Russell. "I wanted to add a little bit of extra excitement."
Russell said she hopes a shorter concert format of 30 to 40 minutes might attract some new-comers to classical music and people with small children.
Plus she said, the locations are less traditional than usual, and might offer a bit more intimacy or texture to the experience.
"It's about getting music happening in our community and also a chance for me to explore different locations ... that maybe the symphony can't go," said Russell.
Jane Russell spoke with CBC Sudbury Morning North host Markus Schwabe about her pop-up concert this Saturday happening at 11 a.m. at Adanac Ski Chalet.
After this Saturday, you can catch one of Jane Russell's free pop-up concerts on the following days:
- Saturday, November 8
- Saturday, December 6
- Saturday, February 28
- Saturday, March 28
- Saturday, April 25
